Replant 2: Day 1

On June 25, some of our group members went to Far East Flora, where we usually buy our supplies from. The staff there were kind enough to help us with the potting and give us advice.

State: Seed

Activities:
1. Pouring the soil
2. Mixing the soil
3. Adding stones to the pot
4. Making holes for the seed

Our Improvements

We definitely noticed and saw plenty of improvements in our latest experiment  compared to the previous two which were unsuccessful. Below are some improvements we noticed and some things we did differently compared to the previous times.

Improvements:
1. We had decided to ask for help and advice from the experts which was better as previously we were using our own knowledge and guessing what would've been better for the plant.

2. We mixed 'Neem Cake Powder' with our soil as adviced by the experts.

  • Contains pesticide
  • Contains fertilizer

3. We added stones into the pot
  • To prevent soil and water from leaking out of the pot

4. We added markers (sticks placed in the soil beside the seeds)
  • To have a rough gage of where each seed was placed
  • To know that anything that grows outside the markers is not part of our plant

We are quite satisfied with what we have done but we will continue to work hard and ensure that our plant is healthy.

Important Update

We will now be updating the blog every Tuesday and Friday. As the new plant was only planted on a Tuesday, we thought it was more convenient to change the date of the blog updates.

Saturday 22 June 2013

Solution #3

We have decided to plant a new set of seeds again and this time, we have agreed to ask for help from the flower shop where we bought the soil and products from. We have contacted them and they have agreed to give us advice and pot the plant for us.

We are hoping for the best and would update the blog frequently.

Problem #3

Earlier this month, we replanted our radishes due to failure of the first batch. However, problems arose again. We suspect it could have been due to the haze. Also, we found bugs, known to destroy the plant's roots, in the soil and flying around the plant.

As shown in the above picture, the plant had withered and died.

We have decided to replant a third time hoping for the best. We will update frequently.

Shopping

We bought new soil for planting the new plant as the old soil contained insects and moss. The shop that we went to is Far East Flora which is located near Caldecot MRT Station

Things we bought:
1. Organic Substrate (which we exchanged for Organic Soil)
2. Organic Pesticides

Monday 3 June 2013

Solution #2

We decided to go back to Far East Flora to, hopefully, ask for an exchange for the soil. Fortunately, we managed to and we immediately planted it the next day.

Mistakes:
1. We didnt check to make sure
2. We paid it blindly, without knowing

Sunday 2 June 2013

Problem #2

While shopping, we encountered a problem. We found out that the 'soil' that we asked for was actually substrate, not soil. It was only after Alex opened it, and said that it wasn't soil, that we found out.

Problem(s):
1. Brought the wrong thing

Tuesday 28 May 2013

Solution #1

We have decided to grow a new plant but we would still be growing the radish in case the new plant fails. We have taken our past failure as a step closer to successfully grow either our Radish plant or the new one that we have not decided on. Research on the new plant is still on going. We realised we made some mistakes that caused the failure of our previous plant and thus, we have a better knowledge of farming.

Our Mistakes:
1) Over-watering
2) Choosing the wrong soil
3) Not having organic pesticide to ensure that there would be no aphids eating away our plants

Problem #1

We recently encountered a problem that we are currently trying to solve. We just discovered that there are aphids, termites and a green layer covering more than half of the surface of the soil, that we suspect to be moss, in our the potted setup.

Problems:
1. Leaves withering
2. Leaves turning white
3. Numerous aphids in soil
4. Moss growing
